“TAINTED MONEY.”
TAKE THE DEVIL’S GIFTS. TO USE AGAINST HJM. “ If the devil were foolish ejnougli to offer money to the church the church should take it and use it against the devil’s work. That was Genejial Booth’s idea, though he expressed it in his own forcible way.” Archdeacon Davios, principal of Moore College, Sydney, expressed himsejf in this way when asked to give his opinion on the action of the Auckland Presbytery’s decision to request the Presbyterian General Assembly of New Zealand not to accept grants from a trust income derived from breweries and licensed hpousqs. “ There is a big difference between making money out of doubtful business for one’s self and taking gifts from other people to deal a blow at the doubtful businecis and destroy its evil influence,” the archdeacon argued. “The Church should not itself engage in enterprises which any large body of public opinion regards as of’ doubtful reputation.
“ The synod of the Diocese of Sydney,” the archdeacon pbinted out, “has decided again and. again that to raise money by raffles and other gambling devices for church purposes is a practice worthy of the sC’verest condemnation.”
