INCREASING LIFE.

CARE OF THE BODY. LECTURE BY DR. JOSEPH. In an interesting lecture at Wellington on Tuesday night (one of a series; instituted by the Wellington branch of the Red Cross Society) Dr. E. Joseph stated that within the last fifty years mankind had added' very considerably to the average length of life'. New Zealand statistics showed that for the twenty years preceding 1901 the average individual life was 55 years, but in the next 20 years to 1921 the average was 64, an increase of nine years.

Proper care of the teeth and tonsils, he> said, was a great help to health. - Raw foods helped a great deal to the natural functioning of the body. All should eat plenty of good vegetables and drink a large amount of water. He spoke, on obesity and its cure, and condemned the practice “of eating five, meals a day.” Two should be any amount, he considered, and this would also give the digestive organs, time to rest. Sugar, milk, and plenty of green vegetables were, he said, the desirable foods, and a pint, eyen a quart, of milk should be a person’s daily quota. Plenty of sunshine and vigorous exercise were a great help towards keeping good health. He was of thq opinion that frequent, medical examination was the only practicable method of preventing cancer. As people had their teeth examined regularly, so should they, especially when getting on in years, be examined by a doctor.
