TENNIS.
OPENING OF PAEROA COURTS.
COMMENCEMENT OF SEASON.
The 1927-28 tennis season was ushered in locally on Saturday afternoon last, when the official opening of the Paeroa Lawn Tennis Club’s courts took place. Although inclined to be threatening, the weather remained fine, throughout the afternoon. About forty visiting players were present from surrounding clubs from as far afield as Matamata, Waffii, Thames, and Hauraki Plains, and, with a good must,er of local players and friends, swelled the attendance to well over one hundred persons.
The president (Mr S. J. Hedge) read apologies for absence from Messrs A. M. Samuel, M.P-, and W. Marshall, and in a happy speech welcomed, the visitors. He reminded all players of the new era for tennis locally, occasioned by the formation of • the Thames Valley Tqnnis Association, and stressed the point that tjie steps taken should do much to stimulate interest in tennis in the Thames Valley. An endeavour was being made to hold an association tournament at Paeroa during the; current season. A tribute was paid to last year’s president (Mr R. B. Penlington), to whose pioneer efforts the present successful state of affairs could be largely attributed.
The courts were then declared open for play, the first ball being served by Mrs Hedge amid applause. During the afternoon a dainty afternoon tea was served by the ladies, and play was enjoyed until dark.
