OBTAINING CHARITY.
MANI WITH MONEY IN BANK.
A FITTING PUNISHMENT.
CHRISTCHURCH, September 20.
When Mallick Joseph Dohney, aged 50, an unmarried man, obtained goods and clothing to the value of £2 10s from the Citizens’ Relief Depot he, did not disclose tho fact that he had a large sum in a bank. Today he pleaded guilty to a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond, in that he had imposed on the relief depot by a false representation.
The chief detective said that Dohney, when signing a form at the depot, said he had no money and no property. Subsequently hq admitted that he had £354 in a savings bank. He possessed that amount when he applied for apd received about £2 worth of goods and 10s worth of clothing from the depot. Counsel said that Dohney thought that, as he was put of employment he was entitled to relief.
Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., romarked to counsel : You know how the Court looks at robbery of thi.-; kind. It’s the meanest thing that can be done.
Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called within six months, provided, he pays £lO to the unemployment fund.
