TENNIS ON THE PLAINS.
ANNUAL MEETINGSTHE NGATEA CLUB. The Ngatea Tennis Club held its annual general meeting in the Public Hall on Monday evening, Mr C. Berteipresiding over an attendance of eighteen members. . REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. annual report commented 011 the fact that there was a credit balance of £l5 13s 7d, despite a very large expenditure on improvements and a slight falling- off in membership. Two courts had been asphalted, sundry fences erected, and over 1500 trees planted. Donations had been -received from Messrs W. and V. Montgomery (a tennis racquet) and the secretary, Mr A. E. Ludlow (two medals). These had bean competed for by club members in a handicap tournament, the winners being Mrs Bertelsen and Mr McKay; The balance-sheet showed subscriptions to be £2B 17s 6d, dances £3l 12s 'sd, afternoon teas £22 9s< 6d, hire of courts for two seasons £25 8s 6d, etc., bringing the- total to £ll3 13s 2d. The expenditure included interest and annual instalment .on courts £6O, rates £2 Ils Id, asphalting courts £33 7s 4d, refreshments £l2 17s 6d, and sundry items bringing the total to £ll9 19s 7d. The cash in hand was £l5 13s 7d, compared .with £2l 18s 9d at the beginning of the season.. The statement of assets and liabilities showed a liability of £5OB ss, being the, balance of the purchase price and interest on the courts, and assets' totalling £421 13s 7d. being land and improvements as at Government valuation £3BO, and nets, rollei, crockery, etc., £26. Mr Mahoney urged that the asset in the. land and improvements should not be written down from the purchase price to the Government valuation. Subject to this being done, the report and balance-sheet was adopted. NEW MEMBERS. Twelve ne/w members were elected. OFFICERS. Mr C. Bertelsen was unanimously re-elected president of the club. Other officers elected were.: Patron, Mr E. L. Walton ,* vice : president, Mr H., Dent; Secretary, Mr A. E. Ludlow ; treasurer, Mr E. A. Mahoney; committee, Messrs T. Alderson, R. C. Abel, K. Clare, E. Coppins, Mrs Bqrtelsen, M.rsi Reed, and Miss J. Rountree delegate to Hauraki Plains Tennis Association, Mr E. A. Mahoney; club captain, Mr W. P. Wylde. The opening day Was fixed for Saturday, October 29. The annual subscriptions were fixed at 30's for men and 15s for ladies, with a penalty of 10 s; and 5s respecti ively if not paid by Decennber 31Minors under 17 would be admitted at half rates and honorary members at ss. GENERAL. A vote of appreciation for services rendered during the past season <vas accorded Messrs A. H. McClean, T. A. McClean, and A. Douglas, who > had assisted with horses, implements, and! personal labour while the asphalting was being done. A vote of thanks was accorded those ladies who -had assisted through out the season .with the afternoon teas. It was- decided to open the courts immediately to members and intending members. After a discussion on ways and means of encouraging sociability and . younger players, the delegate to the Tennis Association was instructed to support the zone system of playing the competition matches. — THE KEREPEEHI CLUB. The sixth annual general meeting of the Kerepeehi Tennis Club was held in the Kerepeehi Hall on Tuesday evening, Mr J. H. Nicholson pre,siding Over an attendance of twenty members'. REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. The annual report stated that the 1926-27 season had been a very sucu cessful one. Though do. competitions r had been won, the teams by no means' disgraced the club. The A team'had won more matches than it had lost, and the B team had been the runnersup in the competition. Several friendly matches had been played and won. Club members had patronised the Association’s competitions in strong force and had done very well. The roll number stood at 17 men, 10 ladies, and 5 juniors. The thanks of s the club we,re due to those who had assisted in- making the club’s activities so agreeable, and to those; who had donated prizes, etc. The balance-sheiet showed an excess of recejptsi over expenditure of £lB 18s 4d, compared with £l7 Is 8d at the commencement of the season. Subscriptions received totalled £3l Os 6d, donations £1 Is, dances,, etc., £l2 6s 10d. The total receipts amounted to £6l 19s lid. Adding to the, annual report, the president referred to the loss suffered by the club by the departure from the district of kfr and Mrs B. Frecklington, whose places. would be difficult to fill. Twelve new members were elected. OFFICERS. Officers appointed for the season were as follows :— President, Mr J. H. Nicholson ; vicepresidents, Messrs G. Boswell and N. Clay; secretary and treasurer, Mr E. C. Smart; committee, Mesdames F. Rogers, C. Hudson, C. O’Loughlin, Messrs J. Kidd, W. Herkt, A. Hegh, and C. Hudson ; delegate to Association, Mr J. Nicholson, junr.; social Rcommittee,, Mesdames A. Hegh, JKidd, H. Hoff, and Miss Rogers ; selector, Mr C. R. Hudson ; auditor, Mr C. R. Hudson. OPENING DAY. October 15 was adopted as the official opening day, on the understanding that it would be postponed until the following Saturday if the day , chosen happened to bei wet. A PAVILION. The. opinion was expressed that the committee which had the matter in hand should proceed immediately
with the provision of a pavilion
Some discussion ensued as to the position of the building, some members advocating leaving sufficient spacej for the addition of another court, while others opposed this on account of the wetness of the ground and the unliklihood of another court being necessary for some time. The matter was left to the committcje'. RESURFACING COURTS. It was decided that the courts be resurfaced with tar and permanently marked prior to opening day. ASSOCIATION COMPETITIONS. The question of whether the Tennis Association should play itsi competitions as in the past sejason, or by the knock-out system or the zone system, was discussed, and the delegate was instructed to support the zone system.
