A NEW INDUSTRY.
BY-PRODUCTS, OF CALVES.
PROPOSED CO-OPERATIVE CO.
An outline of the new industry which is now being developed to utilise the whole of the large numbers of calves that previously were killed for their skins was, given to the shareholders of the Hauraki Plains Dairy Company at their annual meeting at Turua on Thursday last by Mr S. Lye, of Newstead. Mr Lye explained that it had been proposed to establish a large co-opera-tive company to utilise the bodies of calves in the production of veal, gelatine, Salf-foot jelly, bonedust, veils, and tinned tongues, but action by large interests concerned, in calf skins and the export of meat had necessitated prompt action, and a private company had been formed in the meantime, until a co-operative company could be organised. When the industry was developed each calf would be worth over 10s at the farmer’s gate, where the. collector’s cart would pick the calves, up. As yet only th© meat was exported, but 150 men were kept employed. The company was conducting investigations, and proposed to import the necessary plant and erect its own workst When the works were in operation store cows and bulls would be handled as well as calves. Only healthy, wellnourished calves at least three days old would be accepted. Further details .were given by Mr Lye in the limited time a,t his disposal, and he was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of the chairman of directors, Mr A. H. Rogers, who expressed the opinion that the future of the industry was much brighter than was generally thought.
