CARTAGE OF TIMBER.

DAMAGING OF COUNTY ROADS.

RATEPAYERS TO BE PROTECTED.

A request to cart heavy logs and loads of timber over certain roads was received at the Ohinemuri County Council’s meeting yesterday.

Cr. F. C. Hubbard was of opinion that the council should do all it could to assist the industry. At the sama time if was necessary to safeguard the interests of ratepayers. He moved that the request be granted, subject to a sufficient warranty being forthcoming, and the roads were maintained to the requirements and' satisfaction of the engineer.

In seconding Cr. W. F. Johnstone said that he would like to see a formal agreement entered into.

The chairman, Mr H. M. a Corbett, said that ap agreement woujd be prepared. He, too, fought the applicant should be helped and a local industry encouraged, yet at the same time the council had a duty to perform to the ratepayers.
