THE COMING OF AGE.

OPENING BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL.

The coming of age of the Waikato Winter Show Association was celebrated at Hamilton yesterday, when the twenty-first annual exhibition was declared formally open by His Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Charles Ferguson.

Promptly at 2 p.m. His Excellency arrived at the main entrance, accompanied by the Mayor of Hamilton (Mr J. R. Fow), the Hon. J. A. Young, member for Hamilton, Mr D. S. Reid, member for Waikato, Mr T. WRhodes, member for Thames, Mr C. E. Macmillan, member for Tauranga, and Mr W. Wallace, president of the Waikato Winter Show Association.

As the Vice-Regal party took up their seats on the dais the huge gathering was up-standing while the orchestra accompanied the singing of the National Anthem.

In a brief speech Mr Wallace extended a hearty welcome to His Excellency and thanked him for honouring the people by his presence. Mr J? R. Fow followed, and in extending a welcome on behalf of the citizens of Hamilton said that not only was the Winter Show Association celebrating it- 21st anniversary, but Hamilton was enjoying the fiftieth anniversary of tis proclamation as a borough.

His Excellency made a short speech congratuating the association on the result of its efforts, and the great value of the show from an educative standpoint. The Minister of Health (Hon. J. A. Young), who is also member for Hamilton, offered his congratulation to the association, and wished it “jnany happy’ returns of the day.” He went on to mention the keen interest which the Governor-General displayed in the prosperity of the primary producers, and said that the Government was fully alive to the requirements of the man on the land.
