BOROUGH ELECTIONS.
POSITION OBTAINING AT PAEROA.
NINE CANDIDATES OFFERING
With the near approach of the municipal elections, which take place on Wednesday next the return of candidates is an all-important topic of conversation.
So far as the Borough of Paeroa is concerned the position is fairly simple, and there does not appear to be much interest taken in the matter. Nine nominations have bee received for the eight seats on the council. The vacancy has been caused by the retirement of Mr G- P. de Castro, and seven of the sitting councillors are again seeking re-election. The new candidates are. Messrs R. B. Dunlop and W. Turner. Mr Dunlop, who unsuccessfully contested the 1925 election, is a young man full of enthusiasni and zeal. In addition to owning a successful business and freehold property in the borough, Mr Dunlop possesses a productive. farm at Netherton. The other new candidate, is Mr W. Turner, who has lived in Paeroa lor the last fifty years. In the days of the mining boom in the Waihi district Mr Turner was a prominent official of the local Carters’ Union, and other kindred organisations. It is probably for his work in the interests of friendly societies that Mr Turner is best known. As a foundation member of the Star of Pearoa Druids Lodge, he has held every position open to him. At the present time. Mr Turner is district president of the No. 10 Druidical district, and is also secretary of the local lodge.
The sitting councillors, Messrs P* E. Brenan, E. Edwards (deputyMayor), F. E. Flatt, H. J. Hare, J. Pinder, E. A. Porritt, and J. AV. Silcock, are Veil known, and have rendered signal service to the- borough in their respective positions and are fairly certain to receive liberal support from the ratepayers who have kept in touch with municipal affairs during the last two years. The fact that Messrs Brenan (Thames Hospital Board representative), Edwards (Thames Harbour Board), and Flatt (Thames Valley Electric Power Board) have been returned unopposed to their respective positions is a clear indication that the burgesses are well satisfied with the manner in which they have carried out their duties in the interests of the borough.
