ANZAC DAY

Sir. —I desire to enter an emphatic protest against the present method of commemorating the doings of the Anzacs on Gallipoli in the early part of the Great War with Germany and the Turks. The present procedure is fast degenerating into a religious service from which an important section of the community is barred attending by conscientious scruples. It seems to me that the seats occupied by tihe Salvation Army Band should be occupied by the borough councillors and county officials, and that the ceremony should be given more of a civic and national colour and Import than hitherto. Those who want to go to a church service can hold one in their particular temple in their own particular way, but seeing that the territorial lads are expected to parade, and are of mixed creeds, in all fairness to them -and to others, the sky pilots should sit among the audience, and a few speeches of a patriotic character, interpersed with suitable music, take the place of the “sob stuff” usually provided upon the anniversary. E. DAVIES.
