HIGHWAY TO POKENO.

REPAIR WORK COMMENCED. IMPROVING UNMETALLED PART. On Tuesday last, amid rain, workmen commenced to plough up the section of unmetalled road on the, Pae-roa-Pokeno main highway a few miles beyond Waitakaruru. Passing. motorists concluded that t'ne Public Works Department bad commenced to continue the work so long delayed, but on inquiry it was found that such was not the case. The workmen were employed by the Whangamarino Road Board, and it was by mischance and not intention that the ploughing was done in wet weather.

Realising that the new deviation could not be made by the Public Works Department in time, to take the winter traffic, the Road Board decided to do what it could to make the highway as good as possible. Grading and the judicious use of the small amount of metal available were, therefore ordered, and though during the wet weather it appeared that more harm than good had been dene, the road has since dried up and is now in a better state than was expected.
