PAEROA RACES.
THE ANNUAL GATHERING.
GOOD MEETING ANTICIPATED.
The first day’s races under the aus- - pices of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club will take place on the Paeroa course, r Thames Road, to-morrow (St. Pat- ; rick’s Day). Practically the only thing that is required to ensure an enjoyable day’s j outing is fine weather. A visit to the course yesterday afternoon revealedW small army of workmen busily engaged putting the finishing touches tP’ various matters. At a glance it could' be seen that no efforts have been - spared to cater adequately for. the comfort and welfare of turf patrons.? The club’s beautiful property lends it-/ self admirably to the purpose for.' . which it was acquired. Although weR endowed by nature, permanent im- ’ provements in one direction or an,other have been effected by the club/ each year. The greatest change since the last, meeting is the moving back- ? of the people’s stand, thus giving moro' room r-n the lawn for patrons to view - the races, which can be seen for .the entire distance round the.cQurse. dining-rooms and ladies’/ cloak rooms' have been increased considerably, and other conveniences provided. F>r the first time for nearly a score of years publicans’ booths inside-ami . outside will be available for those de?', siring liquid refreshments. catering arrangements have been' made, and hot water wjll be procuis . able for .those who wish to picnic in tlie grounds. ‘ A convenience ■ that- will be appreciated by those in the outside en--' , closure is the provision cf a new nuqiber board, which has erected he-. 1 tween the stewards’ stand and the« totalisator house. ' , The race, track is in perfect condK tion, and the care and expense expended on it have been fully appreciated, judging by the comments expressed by a trainer yesterday. Racehorses are arriving in large numbers, and it is likely that afi ■ available accommodation will be in use by this evening. In addition ,to about 20 horses that were at thecourse yesterday arrived by the express and evening trains, and more are expected to-day. In all, 130 acceptances have been received for the eight events set down for decision to-morrow, and racegoers should be treated to a very interesting race period. The handicapper (Mr F. J. McManemin)’ has the winners well concealed and speculators will . have an exciting time selecting the first and second horses.
