ROYALTY AT FAIR.

KING’S JOCULAR MOOD. PIPE FOR PRIME MINISTER. LONDON', February 25. King George and Queen Mary visited the British Industries Fair. They inspected the Overseas Buyers’ Club and the Australian and New Zealand displays. The King was delighted to learn that as a consequence of his interest last year in the sales of British typewriters this trade is now booming. The Queen bought the King a cigarette cabinet. When His Majesty noticed a huge pile of tobacco pipes on one stall he remarked jocularly: “Where is Mr Baldwin ?”

Seeing an immense briar pipe with a stem 2ft long and a bowl which would hold an ounce of tobacco, His Majesty added : “Here is a beauty. Why not send it to Mr Baldwin ?” The president of the Board of Trade, Sir Philip Cuiiliffe-Lister, explained that an aluminium pipe had been presented to the Prime Minister at Birmingham, but so far he had been afraid to smoke it. His Majesty next noticed an inno-cent-locking exhibit intended for America. Outwardly it looked like two handsomely bound volumes. The titles were “Canterbury Tales” and “The Assembly of Souls." Someone discovered that t,he top opened, revealing a whisky bottle and a syphon.

Mr F. N. Bartram, Labour M.P. for Grey Lynn, Auckland, was presented to His Majesty.

Their Majesties also visited the New Zealand exhibits, in respect of which they offered their congratulations. The Queen took samples of tjie cheese shown. She also noticed trays made out Of casein. She said she had previously bought some of these.
