AFTER THE HOLIDAYS.
SHORT PERIOD OF SLACKNESS. .NORMAL CONDITIONS RETURNING. Although Paeroa was full of activity during Christmas week, and everyone seemed prepared and willing to spend on themselves and upon others, there has since been a slackness in trade and commerce, not only in Paeroa, but in most parts of the Dominion. Christmas and holiday time are always animated, but a trail of dullness invariably follows for a 'few weeks. Some attribute the after-effects to scarceness of money, and .to a great extent this theory is. quite true. Broken time and. the suspension Of work, together with the extra sitrain on the purse during the festive season no doubt accounts 'for the quietude that now reigns.
Referring to the farming industry, there is no disputing the fact that the farmers will have little to complain about this season. It has been iemarkable for the growth of grass, and for harvesting operations, has been equally favourable. There is no cause to look upon the future adversely, for the werks in operation before the holidays, are in hand again, and it is not difficult to predict that things will in a short time become quite ‘ normal and, as Shakespeare said, "Richard will be himself again.”
Times are hard and money’s scarce, But there’s plenty of work to do ; Keep bn smiling all the time, Laugh, and the world laughs with you.
