CHRISTMAS EYE.

HAPPY HOLIDAY CROWD. PAEROA A BUSY CENTRE. The fact that the majority of the district dairy farmers did not receive their monthly cheques until Wednesday and Thursday of this week no doubt 'accounted largely for,the crowd of happy people thronging Paerpa’s main streets to-day. Despite the unsettled state of the weather a happy crowd is about, viewing the .attractive shop-window displays with curious eyes and wondering what to buy. The town appears to be full of pica-sure-seeking wanderers, who stroll leisurely about in the happiest of moods, infinitely glad that Christmas is here once more. People o'f all classes roam along the streets, chattiiig gaily and paying the season’s compliments to all. That Paeroa is coming into i.ts own Us a natural shopping centre appears to be more evident this Christmastide. Undoubtedly the local shop windows are a credit to the. owners, who have spared no pains to display their wares attractively and provide a prompt ’nd court sous staff, ever ready with suggestions, to attend to the customers’ requirements.

It was gratifying to notice that the borough council staff was early at work this morning. Before 9 o’clock the main streets had been swept .and water channels cleared of debris and dirt, thus adding considerably to the appearance of the town. Judging by the .appearance of the streets, at the time of going to press, Christmas Eve, 1926, will be record one for Paeroa.
