LOCAL AND GENERAL.
With the arrival and departure of every train at the Paeroa stationduring the l a ist few days an unusually, busy scene has. been -presented. Already the general exodus, o'f people has commenced, and numbers of families have Idft for various parts of the, province on holiday bent. The inward and. outward expresses have been, lengthy, and have carried a large number of passengers. Judging by the figures to dute, a record number o'f people have travelled from Paeroa this week. Matters ar.e very brisk in the goods department also, but in this, instance the Inward. traffic is greater than the Outward.
The institution of the vicar, the Rev. Wayne, into the living of St. John’s, Waihi, was performed’by the Bishop of Waikato (Dr. Cherrington) on Wednesday evening. During the evensong the bishop preached a suit-’ able sermon, after which he -met the parishioners and visitors at a supper, provided by the ladies of St. John’s in the, schoolroom.
This week’s issue or the “N.Z.Sporting and Dramatic Review”, bears a particular appeal .to racing enthusiists, as the Auckland Cup candidates are 'featured in a striking series of photographs offer a cardful study of their qualities and possibilities of victory. Animated snaps also appear of principal events at the Darguville meeting. .The Wqst End Rowing Club’s “At Home” is the subject of an attractive page, and other full pages are devoted to the King’s College annual prize-giving and the picturesque breaking-up celebrations at the Ladies’ College, Remuera. (The cqritre pages, show exclusive photographs of the Queen of Rumania’s visit to the United States. Stage, motion pictures, and fashions occupy their own special niche in beautiful reproductions and variety of interest. All the world offers its choice in illustrations, including British girl athletes at the Paris Stadium, Maori ’foob a Jlers in France, movie stars and their mascots, wedding df the Pope’s niqce, the luxurious Carinthia, etc. s
Among the private companies registered in Auckland this week was the Paeroa Theatre? Buildings, Ltd. Objects: To acquire a section with frontages to Normanby RoAd and. Willoughby Street, Paeroa, and erect a. theatre, etc. Capital: £l's,ooo' in £1 shares. Subscribers: T, H. Billing, 6000 shares; P. J. Jennings, C. J. Stark, and H. C. Baker. 3000 shares each.
Money seems to be fairly free in Te Aroha,. The “News” reports that there was a surplus of £9 ’from the Herfies Memorial Fund, and a memorial arch is to be erected with it. The, fpnd raised to entertain the; GovernorGeneral showed a surplus of £lO, and a’ meeting of the ‘committee decided to’ give half to the local Benevolent Society and half to the Dobson Relie'f 'Fund. * • •
, Three hundred brace of partridges are expec,ted to ojrrive by the Rimutaka about March. It was suggested at a meeting of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society that these should be allocated to Putaruru, Hinuera, Miranda, Thames, Waipa Valley, ajnd Kaiwaka. A decision will be made at the’ next meeting of the society. Quotations will .also- be obtained for the provision of 100 brace o'f red-leg partridges.
At the last .meeting o’f the Piako County Council the chairman stated that a Sale of goods at the Waiorcngomai quarry had taken place. The concrete mixer, which had cost about £2500, was sold for £430. A bid of £s'so was offered • for the crushing plant, which had cost £1100; but wafs not accetped. There was a. dead loss on the metal mixer. Cr. Lowry further remarked that every yard .taken from’the quarry had' cost the ratepayers 21s per yard. The quarry plant cost the. council £22,000. The Waiorongomai quarry was the biggest disaster the council e.ver had. He suggested .that further discussion be deferred until an offer for a prospective purchaser was considered.
The New Zealand Hockey Association has issued a report showing that a/inet profit of £1525 was made on the recent; tour of the Indian Army hockey team. Ten ,pe,r cent, of this amount goes, to the. New’Zealand Association, and. the. balance is to .be divided; among the provincial, associations in proportion to,the takings at the several centres. The extra, match played at, Auckland .at the. request of Captain., Cowan to ;; defray...the cost df, assembling the team. in India brought a net gate of, £5lO, and of this amount £2OO was being remitted to India., - . Armstrong, Whitworth, -Ltd., accepted the proposals for the financial reconstruction' of the company at an uproarious meeting held at London. So,me of. the shareholders declared that the directors had achieved a masterpiece of .commercial and -financial ineptitude, resulting in thousands of shareholders losing their savings. Lord Southborough, the chairman, admitted thfljt thte old-management deserved the majority off the strictures passed upon it, and assured shareholders that there would be no question of compensating the. directors who were losing their seats. , The debenture-holders' also agreed to the proposed moratorium.
In the brief history of this country millions Of acres have been laid wasteand ‘barren that might have yielded rich continuing crops of .timber for all time (the Wairarapa Age remarks). ,As a direct result o'f this almost.incredible waste and folly New Zealand has. lost untold millions of: pounds of. wealth, and has, spent, .and is expending, huge, sums in coping with 'forces of flood devastation and erosion that need never ha,ve been unleashed in their present scale and magnitude. It should be very easy for all concerned to agree .that in the Wairarapa ®nd throughout New Zealand a halt must be called without delay in. this ruinous destruction and squandering oof irreplaceable national assets. « .
