WORK BY MAYOR EULOGISED. ■ TRIBUTE BY DEPUTY-MAYiOR., At the conclusion of .the special meeting of the Paer.oa Borough Council on Tuesday night the deputy--Mayor (Cr. E. Edwards) paid a glowing tribute to the work of .the; Mayor (Mr W. Marshall). In extending to the Maypr and Mayoress the compliments off the season on behalf of the council Cr. Edwards said that he and his, colleagues were genuinely appreciative of the splendid work done by the Mayor. Th,e year had been a strenuous one, but much had. been done and steady progress ’ maintained. There had been opposition.round .the. council table at times, 'but councillors had generally, conceded their opinions And worked with a. will for the welfare and in the interests of ratepayers. He trusted that the Mayor, Mayoress, am? family would enjoy a merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year,.

The Mayor returned thanks to the •councillors and assured .them thajt their good wishes were much-appre-ciated and heartily reciprocated. Municipal affairs during the year had been arduous, but he believed progress had ‘ been made. When progressive measures were promoted somebody’s corns, were sure to be trodden on and opposition met with. It was gratifying to find that usually’ the opposition could be overcome a,nd feelings sunk in the. interests df the common weal. Every councillor, owed a duty to the ratepayers, and was entitled to his opinion according to the light in which he viewed matters. The Mayor also paid a tribute, to the work of the. town clerk (Mr, W. C. Alexander), and extended to him and other members of the borough staff seasonal greetings, and said he hoped they would enjoy ,a happy holiday.
