VALIDITY OF POLL.
KEREPEEHI SPECIAL ROADS LOAN.
ALLEGED INSUFFICIENT NOTICE.
As the "Hauraki Plains Gazette" was not used as an advertising medium the recent poll on the. Kerepeehi .special roads loan proposal may be upset. T'ne clerk of the Magistrate’s. Court at Thames notifies, that an inquiry under the Local Elections and Polls Act, 1925, and Amendments, 1926, will be held at .the Courthouse, Thames, next month to determine the validity or otherwise of the poll held at Kerepeehi oh . October 26, 1926. The matter was mentioned at the last meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council, when some information was sought by a Thames lawyer. Cr. Fisher (Kerepeehi riding) said he understood that some objectors to the loan proposal were, endeavouring to have it upset. They were contending that the notices concerning the poll were not advertised in a newspaper circulating in the district, and on that account some, of the ratepayers did not know of the poll.
The county chairman replied that the notices had been advertised in the “Thames Star,” and though the "Star” did not circulate in the area he was of opinion that the poll was advertised sufficiently to meet the requirements of the law.
Until twelve months ago the Hauraki Plains County Council’s advertisements were given to both newspapers if of geifferal interest to all parts of the county, but if the notices were only o’f interest to pzparticular district the notice was inserted in the newspaper located nearest to that district.
At .the November, 1925, meeting of the council that policy was altered, and all the advertising was given to the “Hauraki Plains Gazette” fdr. six months on the understanding that thq “Thames Star” should he used during the following half-year. The arrangement worked satisfactorily when the “Gazette” was; the official advertising medium, for it circulates throughout the, whole of the county. Now that the stipulated time has expired it is the intention of the county chajirman .to revert to the system previously used of advertising in both papers.
