STARTLING ACCIDENT.
WAIHI LADY INJURED LN CAR. STICK THROWN FROM ROADSIDE. A startling incident occurred on the Hikutaia-Thameg ( road -on Saturday forenoon, when Mr B. Roberts, of Waihi, accompanied by his wife and members of his. family, was proceeding by car tq Thames; About half a mile beoynd Hikutaia, and while travelling between 15 and 26 miles an hour, Mrs Roberts, who was at the wheel, w.as suddenly struck cldsei to the left eye by a pointed ti-treq stake, apparently hurled with considerable Iforce from a scrub-covered paddock running parallel with thq nqad. Nobody in the car actually saw the stick thrown, but one of the occupants, Miss. P. Wallnutt, saw the missile as. it hurtled through the air, but 1 had not time even to utter a warning cry before it stlruck Mr® Roberts.
was immediately pulled up, and Mrs Roberts was found tot be practically in a statq df collapse, with b’lodd streaming from a punctured, wound and from her mouth. ASte? doing everything possible to stanch the flow of blood, Mr Roberts made all spqed to Thames, where the- wounds, were dressed by Dr. Gray. The latter then ordered Mrs Roberts’ immediate return to Waihi for further medical treatment. The stick, sharply pointed at the end, was 4ft 6in long, with a butt some 4in in circumference. Had the missile struck Mrs Roberts a fraction of an inch nearer the left eye the loss of that member must have followed. The victim, who was attended to by Dr. Short immediately on reaching her home, is making satisfactory progress.
