CORRESPONDENCE.

PLAINS DRAINAGE. (To the EditorJ Sir, —In regard to your article, “Plains Drainage,” in your issue of November 1, you mention .that there is no unamity on the proposals recently brought forward, and thftt possibly thq same will have to be rejected. Noting the- objections, firstly, I would say .that a few trees, the cost of removing which is estimated at £lOO, should not be regarded as an immovable obstruction to progress. Secondly, the levels given as 1 to 4000 on another proposed route : I> take it that these figures apply to a section of the route only, and that gqneraßy the fall is much moto. Now, during the last three years many attempts have been made to l solve drainage problems in this area, and I consider that the present porposals are nearer to bieng acceptable, to all parties than any yet brought forward, though possibly slight amendments, would be advantageous. But, unfortunately, some board members (would-be politicians) are attempting to pave the way to self-aggrandisement, or, in plain a seat on„the visualised amalgamated board, by condemning the proposal and suggesting divers amendments which can only be characterised as vote-catchers. But, on the other hand, 1 think the majority of members of both boards are sane, fair-minded men, who will not be influenced by these midget politicians, who would be well advised t« each consider his own ratepayers, on whose vote he is holding a responsible position in the meantime, and then, when amalgamation is, let each man seek election on his merits. I think there is no cause ’for alarm, and I a.m sure that the good feeling existing between the boards to-day will be sustained by the wiser ones. GUNNER.
