HEAVY CARTING.

STATE OF OLD TE AROHA BO AD. OHINEMURI COUNCIL “BITTEN.” A sequel to having permuted,a local sawmiller, Mr J. H. Evans, to care logs over the Old Te Aroha Rq.ad during .the winten months was ventilated at tlie Ohinemuri County Council meeting yesterday, when a letter was received from Mi - J G. Costello, Paeroa, advising that owipg to the he#,vy timber haulage having been permitted on that road it was now in a bad state of repair. In asking that mqtal be on the portion towards the hill the writer stated that he was experiencing difficulty in carting to and from his property. There; were also .two bridges on the same road requiring immediate ■ attention. On the motion of Cr. A. D. McGuire it 1 .was. resolved that the engineer be instructed to see what was required to make the road passable. Speaking to the resolution, Cr. W F. Johnstone said that permission had. been given to Mr Evans to cart about 30 logs, provided he kept the ro'ad in good repair. Instead, over 90 ! logs had been carted, including some large ones, and the road had been left in a deplorable state. As Mr Costello had pointed out, it would take a roadman five on six weeks to repair the road. Across the Long Swamp portion of the road, which was of peaty formation, at least 50 yards of metal was required. The carting of the logs had been directly responsible for the state of the road, and he thought that the council should insist on Mr Evans putting the road into a reasonable state of repair. Sdme consideration was due to thq council for the concession granted. Cr. F. C. Hubbard said that Mr Evans would not have been granted the concession had he not given an undertaking that the road in question would not be- damaged. Previously Mr Evans had been granted permission to do heavy carting on the. Komata road, and in that instance he had kept the road in good order and had strengthened thq bridges. His attitude on that occasion had influenced the council to grant permission to cart over the. Old Te. Aroha road. Cr. Johnstone agreed, but added that so far as thg Old Te Aroha road was concerned the Council had been “bitten.”
