COMMITTEE MEETINGS.

POSITION OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.

QUESTION OF LACK OF HARMONY.

That His Worship the Mayor (Mr W, Marshall) realises that it is not quite what it should be amongst the members of the. P,aerpa Borough Council w.as clearly evidenced at th© council meeting held ion Thursday night last, when he, having given notice -of intention, moved that the following resolution, pas.sed on May 28, 1925, bC rescinded : “That the committee meetings be held on the Tuesday preceding the mdnthly meeting, as in the past." Speaking to the resolution the Mayor said that in his opinion the, council would do better work if the various committees met separately and indefinitely and brought down the reports for the whole council. While not particularly seeking a change, if better results would be forthcoming then a change was desirable and in the interests of all. He had heard it sajd that he was. running the town, and perhaps if his resolution was given effect ,to the members would be more satisfied. It would mean a lot of extra work for the town clerk and himself, but that could be overcome if it meant an improvement in matters.

The Mayor said it was obvic'us that the spirit of harmony, which was essential a ; mongst the members, was somewhat lacking, and that was not desirable, especially in view of the Important work which lay before the council. It was necessary that the councillors should put thej r shoulders to the wheel and ajl pull together. Cr. de Castro said that the Mayor’s contentions were pure imagination. He denied that he had said the Mayo-r was running the town, but he; had said that the Mayor und®.rtook a lot of matters without taking his colleagues into his- confidence. All the same, it was. reaidily recognised that the Mayor did an enormous amount of sterling work. As a seconder could not be found the Mayor withdrew his resolution and the matter closed.
