BASKETBALL SOCIAL.
ENJOYABLE EVENING SPENT.
PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES.
Despite the fact that unfavourable weather prevailed, there was a large and representative attendance at the P.ae,rpa Basketball Association’s, dance and euchre tournament at the Gaiety Theatre on Thursday night.
The decorations, comprising green, white, and yellow streamers (the association’s colours) and greenery, were tastefully carried out, and were mucn admired. The splendid condition of the floor and the enjoyable music contributed by Pickford’s Orchestra induced a large number of people to dance, and the duties of M.C., performed by Mr L. C. Masters, were efficiently discharged. About fifty persons took part in the euchre tournament, which wa,s conducted on the stage, and Messrs G. H. Taylor and E. G. Preston spent a. busy time controlling the competition. At the supper adjournment the winners of the prizes were, announced as follows Ladies: Mrs L. Gibb, first; Mrs W. H. Taylor, S.econd ; Mrs A. Gooding, third. Men : Mr Tony, first ; Mr L. Gibb, second ; Mr H. McKee; third.
During the evening the president (Mr G. H. Taylor) was called upon to present the prizes won during the. season jus-t closed. In a happy spee.ch he referred to the growing popularity of basketball in Paeroa a.nd district, and intimated that the various competitions had been keenly contested, and the winners were to be congratulated on their success.
He then asked Miss R- Hamilton, captain of the Areta, team, to accept the School Committee’s Shield for the 1926 season. The junior cup was won by the. Kiwi A team( Miss I. Gunn, captain), and the Mo-Uy Fitzgerald Cup by the Paeroa High School team (Miss I. Dare, captain). Each recipient w,as heartily applauded on receiving hey team’s trophy. In thinking all those, who had supported the association the president stressed the value of the inter-schools competition and the spirit of frie.ndly rivalry that existed. Basketball was an ideal winter game for girls, and he hoped the association would grow and prosper. A delicious supper was serve,d in the supper-room adjoining,which was also prettily decorated.
