PLAINS DRAINAGE.
CENTRAL AREA IMPROVEMENTS. CONFERENCE OF BOARDS. A conference between committees of the Hauraki and Horahia Drainage Boards was held at Turua oin Friday last to discuss improving the drainage of the low-lying area near the Orchard East-Huirau road. Messrs F. A. Kneebone (chairman), W. E. Hale, J. C. Miller, W. MqDuff, and S. S. Murray represented the Horahia Board, and Messrs G. Gray (chairman), R. Baker, and D. G. McMillan represented the Hauraki Board. An amicable.agreement was arrived at, and it was stated by several speakers that if the previous conferences had been as friendly there would not have been the necessity o’f the recent commission to adjudicate on the question of amalgamation.
The proposal suggested included the improvement of the No. 1 Te Kauri drain and the Wharepoa Road northside drain. A new drain is proposed, to run from Mr W. Taylor’s section and connect with the Thames Valley outlet about 60 chains from its mouth. The Thames Valley outlet will be imprdved and widened to .a 24ft top, and a new double-barrelled flood-gate is to be installed.
The cost of the work will be borne by the two boards. The Horahia Board has its share available, but a loan of about £lOOO will have .to be raised in the Hauraki area. It is not anticipated that this will present any difficulty, but the matter will be fully explained to the settlers concerned at a meeting this morning.
