A REQUIREMENT WAIVED
OMAHU AND ONETAI DRAINAGE. A NEW PROPOSAL. A decision of the Hob. K. S. Williams affecting the pockets of settlers, in the Omahu and Onetai drainage districts in connection with the Governnnrent Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers Improvement Scheme was responsible for many expressions of satisfaction at Thursday’s meeting of the Thames County Council (states the “Thames Star”). After referring to previous correspondence on the subject, the Minister advised that the proposal that the council should arrange for a contribution of two-thirds of the cost of the lO'mahu and Onetai drainage improvement had been reviewed, and, as a result, he was prepared to waive that requirement. The work in qustion would be carried out as part of the Waihou and, Ohinemuri Rivers’ improvement work, and it was proposed to start the work as soon as the Ruston drag-line had completed its work on the Hikutaia stream, a period of six or eight weeks being requirerj for this. It was udnerstood that the settlers fully realised that under the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers improvement work the lands benefited would, in due course, be rated fo'r a portion of the betterment conferred.
