CALLING OF FIREMEN.
TRAVELLING AND SPEED LIMIT.
TEST CASE AT THAMES.
A member of the Thames' volunteer fire briga.de was charged before Mr J. W. Poyntpn, S.M., with driving a car in Pollen Street at a greater speed than 15 miles an hour.
Sergeant McDonnell, who prosecuted, said firemen appeared to be under the impression that they did hot need to observe the by-law.
For defendant Mr Clendon said that the brigade was a volunteer one. The* defendant lived at some distance, from the fire statiofn. The; members of the brigade had orders to be. at the station in quick time on the sound of the alarm, and in his keenness to obey orders and arrive, on time to board the brigade motor he. had negotiated Polkn Street at' a speed greater than 15 mile,s an hour. This had been the practice for years, and had never entailed prosecution in the past. He submitted that it was not a case for a fine.
The magistrate said he would treat the charge as a ; test case. A conviction would be entered, defendant to pay costs.
