CAR RUNS INTO CANAL.
ACCIDENT AT WAITAKARURU*
FORTUNATE ESCAPE.
Mr R. H. Cameron, Plains County Inspector,-> and Mrs Camerbin had a very fortunate escape in a motor-car accident at Waitakaruru last Saturday afternoon.
Mr Ca,meron was driving towards Waitakaruru, and when nearing the Maukoro Canal bridge he had to pass, a motor-coach that was standing near the side of the rood. Apparently. at about the same time there’ was a car approaching from the opposite direction, and Mr Cameron pulled to the side of the road to avoid a collision. On the soft clay his car slid fdrward and into the canal just outside the flood-gate.
The car landed on its end and tipped over 0,1 to its hood, but neither of the occupants was injured. Had the tide been in they might have meen drowned, for at that point the carial is very deep and the current very fast. The need for protecting the road at this point has often been mentioned, and Mr Cameron’s is not the first ear that has gone into the canal there.
The car was dragged out on Sunday morning, find except for the windscreen, hood, etc., appeared little the worse for its dive into the mud.
