PAEROA TO POKENO.

CONNECTION BY RAILWAY.

EARLY CONSTRUCTION URGED.

The desirability of the, early construction of the proposed Pokeno to Paeroa railway was urged, by a deputation of settlers which waited on the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday and requested support in making representations to the Government on the matte; - .

Mr G, T. Murray stated that the completion of the line at an early date was rendered imperative by the fact that the East Coast railway would- connect with Waihi before long. The line from Pokeno to Pa,croa would save 45% miles in haulage from Paeroa to Auckland, and would relieve the congestion on the present route, via Frankton. The proposed line, which had already been surveyed, had a splendid grade, and its construction offered no difficulties. An unofficial estimate of the cost of construction was £BOO,OOO and the, estimated revenue from it was £96,000, Maintenance costs, would be low. By completing the Pokeno deviation in time to take the traffic from the East Coast railway the proposed duplication of the, present railway .to Frankton could be postponed indefinitely. The matter was referred to the Railways Committee for inquiry and report.
