THE 44-HOHR WEEK. EFFECT IN MOTOR TRADE. SYDNEY, May 20. In connection with the 44-hours dispute the body-building section of the Motor Trades’ Association decided to apply to .the Commonwealth Arbitration Court for deregistration of the Coachmakers’ Union on the ground that members of the union were illegally absent from work, and 'failed to observe the award, which provides for a, 48-hour week of 5% days. If this is granted it will have little effect, on New South Wales who are able to apply to Industrial Commissioner for an a,ward and receive the benefits of thi State’s 44-hour legislation. Branches in other States will be seriously affected. The Motor Traders’ Association claims that there are only six factories -where the employees refused to a,bide by the award. Nineteen are working at full stiength, twenty-two with ninety per cent, of their Strength, and in all other cases fifty per cent, of the men a,re at work.

MANY MEN IDLE. RESULT OF COLLIERIES STRIKE. - MELBOURNE, May 19. Over 2'500 men have been rendered idle in the city as a result of the collieries strike. A message from Sydney states that the. disputes committee of the Trades Hall further considered the coal strike, but there is, little likelihood of an early settlement. IRONWORKERS’ DISPUTE. SYDNEY, May 19A meeting of ironworkers.’ assistat the Clyde engineering works, who a,re on strike, decided to leave negotiations in the ha,nds of the Trades Hall Disputes: Committee. A' member of the committee told the meeting that the committee might instruct the jnen to return to work while negotiations proceeded.
