His Worship the Mayor (Mr WMarshall) has been advised by the Chief Postmaster, Thames, that the Paeroa Post Office will be officially opened by the Prime Minister (the Hon. J. G. Coates) on Thursday next, May 27.
Owing to the storm the Waipu, which has temporarily taken up the running of the Taniwha, did not leave Auckland for Paeroa, yesterday afternoon. .
The alteration and straightening of the electric light lines, rendered necessary by the completion of the post office and the proposed removal of .the band rotunda, were safely carried out by + he Thames Valley Power t ßoard’s staff yesterday. To enable this; to be done it was necessary to cut the power off in the main street area for a couple of hours. The staff had an arduous task in releasing the wires; from the top of. the poles owing to the high wind apd ■ heavy rain which prevailed.
It is understood that, the Northern Steam Ship Co. intends, to replace the g.s. Waipu with the scow Pono in the Piako River service at the end of the month. The motor services have killed the passenger trade, and .the. arrival of winter ha,s caused a reduction of cargo, notably that of dairy produce and fibre.
At .the Police Court at Hamilton on Wednesday two newsvendors were each fined 10s, and costs; 7s, for yvOrking at their calling by selling papers on a Sunday.
Owing to the annual Postings taking place, there will be no parades of the local territorials until Monday, .Tune 14. The half-day para.de which was to have been held fo-morrow afternoon is cancelled on account of the unpropitious weather.
Sunday next, being Whitsunday, there will be .a celebration ot the Holy Communion at St. Piaui’s Church at 8 a«m. Parishioners aj’e reminded that Whitsunday is one of the three days of obligation upon which, in accordance with the. Prayer-book rubric, every parishioner is required ,to receive the Blessed Sacrament. As the Ven. H. A. Hawkins, Archdeacon of Waimate, has arranged to come here, at considerable inconvenience to himself, in order to- give them an opportunity of fulfilling their dpty, it I s * hoped that a.ll. parishioners'Who can possibly do so will avail themselves of the privilege thus: afforded them. The annual tour of the borough' for the, purpose of ascertaining the most necesisary works to be undertaken, and generally to arrange the programme of repairs and maintejnance of streets, was commenced by the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) and counciltors yesterday morning. Proceeding a.long Thames Road to Norwood Avenue, an inspection w,as made of the culvert and water-table loading from Thames Road. A stop was made on Aorangi Road near the racing stables, because the cars were unable to go any farther owing to the mud and deplorable condition olf that road. Proceeding on, the) negd for the provision of a, footpath on the north Bide of Station Road was noted, as also was the bad state of. Quarry Read.
