THE APPLE INDUSTRY.
A FUTURE AHEAD. MINISTER’S ADVICE TO GROWERSA future ahead tor the apple industry was predicted by the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. O. J. Hawken) during his visit to Nelson. It was the duty of the Government, he said, to foster the industry in its early stages, and he thought all, the members of the Government were sympathetic in regard to building up the ffuit industry. This year the growers had had to meet the difficulties of competition and the arsenic scare, but that should not happen every year. The Minister stressed the importance of, keeping up .the quality cJ the fruit, and expressed the hbpe'that the Government would be able to continue the guarantee, as he quite understood that without' it apple export would be difficult to handle. Referring to the control legislation, the Minister said he thought it would be of great benefit to the industries of New Zealand, and if the people put into the leadership of the industries men they could trust there would be little cause to regret the legislation passed. The fruit industry was essentially one that should be organised, and he hoped the growers would ba.ck up their, organisation—the Control Board. Mr H. Atmore, M.P., congratulated the Minister 'for -taking such a bold step in granting the guarantee this season,on 750,000 cases of fruit.
