ATHLETIC CLUB'S SOCIAL

DANCING AND EUCHRE. AN ENJOYABLE EVENING. As a means: of raising revenue for the purpose of launching a. sports meeting and gala day at the local domain later on in the year the Paeroa Athletic Club held a social and dance at the Gaiety Theatre last night. Although the venture did not turn out the financial success the promoters anticipated, the popularity and support df future similar functions. appear to be assured. Those, who. did attend last' night thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Many forms of decoration have been seen at the Gaiety Theatre, but it is doubtful if it has ever looked-more attractive or daintier than it did last night. Red and black streamers suspended from a huge, dome made the main feature of the decorations, while two pillars were erected on the stage and draped in similar colours). The whole effect was very striking, and great credit is, due to Mr K. Slyfield, who was. the originator of, the scheme and mainly responsible for having it carried into effect. Over 100 couples took the floor to the stiai.ns of a local orchestra, the music of which appeared ,to appeal to the majority. Messrs W. Pennell and Eugene Shaw, in the capacity of M’s.C., carried out .their duties faithfully and well. Some 80 players took part in the euchre tournament, which was held on the stage under the control of Messrs G. H. Taylor and T. H. Hale. Handsome prizes: were provided tor the winners, ,and this fact made competition keen. During the supper adjournment the president (Mr W. Marshall) presented the euchre prizes as follows-: La,dies, Mrs J. White 1, Mrs McCullay 2, Mrs, Hague-Smith booby; men, Messrs J. Hamilton 1, W. R- Wilson 2, Hazard booby. The president stressed the need of a live athletic organisation in Paeroa, and appealed to those who had not joined up to consider doing so. A word of praise is, due to the committee for the way it .worked, apd special tribute must be accorded the ladies who came forward and assisted liberally with the supper arrangements.
