CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS.

WIN FOR GALLAGHER, WAIKINO.

The Champion of Cha/npions of the Goldfields was played on the Paeroa green on Saturday, and after a close contest the coveted title wag- won by Gallagher, of the Wailtino Club.After the heayy rain on Friday the , green was a little on the side when play commenced on Saturday morning. Asi the day wore on, and the sun increased in intensity, the green quickly dried and played very truly.

The season’s champion players from Paeroa, Hikutaia, Thames, Te Aroha, Waihi, Matamata, and Waikino were present and fought out the battle for the premier position of champion of champions of the Goldfields, / Following are the details in order of rounds :— ■, ■

When it came to sort out for the final l it was found that Gallagher and Stewart, each with four winsi out of c six, were to have the honour.of fighting for supremacy/ The local repre- . sentative, McCullay, although .playing good bowls-, had only secured three wins out of the six games played. ‘Considerable interest was displayed by .the large gathering of bowlers and onlookers as the two veteran players went on to the rink for the final game and the coveted title-.

Gallagher ted off. with a two, and in the second head Stewart replied with a couple,' making it, all square. On the seventh head Stewart was one* up, but from that head to the 21st -■ -■ Gallagher showed up and won by four points. On the last head Stewart only , needed to trail the kitty for four, and he had hard. luck in not bringing off his shot. Tne contest ended Gallagher' • 20, Stewart 16. • It is, interesting to record that Gallagher- has now won the -title four times out of the five that he has . played ’for it, -while Stewart has won twice in • Succession. Last year Stew- - art did not reach the final stage, and this year he was| runner-up. McCullay, who represented the local A club, won the A grade championship singles this year. The first year he took up bowling at Paeroa he won the .first year players’ championship ; the second year he won the B grade, and■ this is his, third bowling year with the’Paeroa club. He won the A grade championship with 9 wins, W. T. Power being runner-up with seven . wins.

; At the conclusion of the contest the president) of the local ’club, Mr Edwin Edwards, on behalf of the Goldfields clubs, extended hearty congratulations to. Mr Gallagher, whosje win was a popular one. -Mr Stevzart was also complimented upon the hard fight he had put up for supremacy. , The champion a’nd the runner-up suitably. acknowledged the ’complimentary remarks accorded them; ! and in turn complimented the local, bowlers'out he excellence of the arrangements made for the tournament. . An exchange of cheers and individual* congratulations concluded a very enjoyable and highly successful tournament. • BRENAN SHIELD GAMES. During the afternoon the Brenan Shield competition was' advanced a further stage. McDonald, J. JVilkinson, Hale, AV. Towers,-• (skip) 30, defeated G. Vowles, T. Black, E. Edwards, W. Purdie (skip) 18 ; and McDonaly, Wilkinson,, Hale, Towers (skip) 18, defeated Finnie, W. Smith, F. Hayward, G. H. Taylor (skip) 17.
