ASPIRANTS FOR OHINEMURI.

SOME OF THE CANDIDATES.

Some of the candidates for a seat on the Licensing Committee may not be particularly well known to electors', and attention is drawn to .the advertisements appearing in this, paper, together with .the following brief biographical sketches., continued ■ frtim our last issue.

MR. STEPHEN S. ALLEN. Mr S. S. Allen isj practising as a solicitor at Morrinsville, and is fairly well known throughout .the electorate, having contested the Ohinemuri seat in 1922. He has a particularly fine war record, holding the rank of Lieut.-Colonek with of C.M.G., D.S.O. During his service he was- always looked up to by those under his command as a soldier and a man. He is a man Of outstanding ability and unquestionable integrity. MR. PHILIP E. BRENAN.

Mr P. E. Brenna, who isi soliciting the support of the electors, is one who at an early date of his life commenced to serve the public. His first service to Paeroa was, as a* member o’f the local fire brigade, and h© holds a long service medal for his work on that body. He is a foundation member of the Paeroa Borough Council, and occupied the position of Mayor for four years, and still retains .a seat on the council. As Paeroa’s representative on. the Thames Hospital andCharitable Aid Board he has faithfully represented his trust. He has been associated with every branch of sport, and also matters of public in-’ terest in the district. ‘Although only a young man he ha,s devoted a great deal-of time to matters for .the advancement of the district and for the public good. ' MR. JOHN J. CALLAGHAN.

Mr John J. Callaghan, by calling a builder and. contractor, is a Waihi resident of many years’ standing, and has always interested himself in public affairsi. He is now serving his second term as a member, of the Waihi Borough Council, and is chairman of the advisory committee elf the Waihi Technical School. Mr Callaghan hap always been identified with local sporting bodies, and particularly with football swimming, boxing, and cricket; also wi’t,h rifle shooting. He is at the present time hon. secretary of the Waihi Rugby Union, a post he has occupied for some years, and a vice-president of the Waihi Swimming, Boxing, Cricket, .and Rifle 'associations. MR. EDWIN EDWARDS. Mr E. Edwards is a young man of progressive views, and has always taken a keen and active interest in matters pertaining to the welfare of the district. He has filled many important public positions, and was a member of the N.Z.E.F., serving in Egypt and France, where he was, wounded. On returning to New Zealand he for some time commanded the Hauraki Regiment. At the present time he holds'the position of Deputy-Mayor of Paeroa, represents Paeroa on the Thames Harbour Board, is president of >the Paeroa Bowling Club, and' is also, a member off the executive of the Paeroa: Chamber of Commerce. He is standing as an independent candidate, and advertises that if elected he will officiate without fear or favour to anyone.

MR. WILLIAM J. TOWERS.’

Mr W. J. Towers is a successful business man in Paeroa, where he has been located for some 30 He is known as a conscientious, faithful, and efficient tradesman, and carries on a large business) throughout the district as a. painter and decorator, and it - is to his credit that some of the largest jobs tendered for south of Auckland have been executed by himDuring hi"? residence here he has identified ' himself with nearly every public movement and institution. HiS chief achievement was that of being Paeroa’s first Mayor, a position he held x7ith credit for ,two terms—-four years. He is a keen sportsman,- and many local clubs owe much to his enthusiasm and organising ability. He ie a foundation membei- of the Paeroa Bowling Club and was its first secretary ; also he is a member of the committee and an ex-president. He is looked upon as one who can be relied on to be fearless and independent in any matter he takes in hand. MR. JAMES MURRAY. Mi- James Murray has' been a ‘resident of Waihi Tor the past twenty-five years, and during that time has- been a well-known apd prominent figure in the town. For seven years he occupied the office of Inspector and Valuer for the borough of Waihi, which position he vacated ,to commence business on his own account. Mr Murray has been in business during the last 18 years as a land agent and sharebroker, and has also represented the Public Trustee at Waihi, and h,as in addition been valuer and agent for several. outside public institutions. Some years ago the cendidnte was appointed a Justice, of the Peajce. To those unacquainted with him, it might be added that Mr Murray is well known for the firmness with which he stands by his convictions. MR. WILLIAM M. WALLNUTT. Mr William M. Wallnutt is a native of limerick, Ireland, where he was born in 1870. Coming to New Zealand as a, youth, he first went on to a sheep station at Otamatea, and a few years later went to Waihi, where he entered into journalisjm, a calling with which he has since been more or less identified with. Appointed District Coroner in 1907, he has continued to hold that office throughout, and he has been Mayor of Waihi — which, largely through his, efforts as a, member of the Improvements Commission, was converted into a borough some 2'5 years ago—since 1923. He is a. Justice of., the Peace, and was for some years Government representative on the Waihi Fire Beard, and its’ chairman. Mr Wallnutt has also been closely associated with various branches of sport
