MOTOR CYCLIST HURT.

STRUCK BY A MOTOR-CAR.

APPARENT NEGLIGENT DRIVING.

A collision between a motor-car containing four men and a youth named David Rumble, who was riding a motor-cycle, occurred on the main road at Komata near Mr P. R. Hubbard’s. gate on Friday afternoon. From information.available. it appears that the youth, who had been in Paeroa, was returning to Mr A. R. Robinson’s farm at Hikutaia, whei e he is employed. Riding his machine on his correct side of the road, he saw the car approaching on iits wrong side. Rumble slowed down his, machine and kept on his course, expecting every moment that the car would cross to its correct side. However, the driver kept steadily on, and when within about fifteen feet of the car, and seeing that a collision was inevitable, Rumble crossed to his wrong side. As a result the car struck the wheel of the motor-cycle with sufficient force to throw the fider on to the road. Fortunately Rumble escaped with nothing more serious than a sprained wrist and abrasions. The motor-cycle was, not badly damaged. It is understood that the driver of the car had been on hi*s- wrong side of the road for some distance, as indicated by the wheel marks. After the impact the car pulled up and, the inmates got out and offered Rumble a drink.

The matter was reported to ’ the police, and Constable McClinchy has ascertained that the party had come from Thames, and were en route to Waihi. The poli'ce in that town were advised of the occurrence, and it is probable that the whole affair will tie ventilated at the Court. It is understood that from information received the police have appertained that the party had had drink prior to leaving Thames earlier in the day, and that several hotels were visited on the run through. It is believed that there was a fair quantity of liquor in the car also.
