SCHOOL PICNIC.

AN OUTING AT TIROHIA. ENJOYABLE DAY SPENT. The most keenly anticipated event of the year is the Tirohia School annual picnic. Parent^ - , friends, and scholai'si combine to make the day one of pleasant memories in the district, and this, year’s gathering was no exception; in fact, it was. even more enjoyable than former ones. A gathering of over 200 persons assembled on Mr Wiggins’ property, across the Waihou River, on Saturday, where the event wa& held.

Fortunately the earlier part of the day was fine, but during the afternoon several heavy showers fell. Though the showers were of short duration the picnic was somewhat marred, but a canvas screen which was erected in case of dirty weather provided shelter while the rain lasted.

It was the children’s - day out, and the adults left nothing updone .to provide for their amusement and pleasure. A lengthy programme of running events and novelty races was held, and it was not ;the fault of the organisers if every child did not receive a prize of some kind. A huge Koppa-Maori was made, and a pig and an enormous quantity of vegetables were cooked and eaten in approved native style. This caused considerable fun, but it proved a most enjoyable meal. Apart from numerous lolly scrambles and races for the children the adults were not neglected, and they, too, competed. The married ladies’ race was. won easily by Mrs Firth, while Mr Prendergast carried off the trophy in the married men’s sprint. The single ladies’ ra'ce was won comfortably by Miss, Mary Wiggins.

During >thb afternoon visitors from Paeroa, Mangaiti, and Te Aroha 'rolled up and took part in the function.
