THE NEW POST OFFICE.
A VERY HANDSOME BUILDING.
NEARING COMPLETION.
Steady progress with the erection of Paerqa’s, pew post office is being made, and during the past few weeks a noticeable difference has been effected inside. The ceilings in the downstairs portion of the building are no.w completed, and they look very' handsome, being done in fibrous plaster, with the beamjs’ and cornices picked out in white in the public space. A similar ceiling has been carried o,iit in the postmaster’s room. The mail room has a ceiling of fibrous piaster, beam and cornice effect, and stained rimn panels. • The three main pillars in the building present a handsome appearance. The snow-white plaster disguises the huge steel! staunchions which are encasted in concrete. These pillars support the steel beams. on which the upper storey is placed.
Upstairs the ceilings are composed chiefly of Maxwell board and heart rimu panel, finishing?. The partitions for the walls are in position, and comprise lathes on which is. to be placed hair plaster, giving the Walls a' special, gi’anite-like finish. On Thursday a s.olkl heart rimu staircase was completed and placed in positron. This staircase coniiects the living quarters upstairs with the rear portion of the building downstairs.
The Robin Hood boiler for the steam heating radiator system throughout the building is nearly completed, and at present the electricians are engaged on completing the electric lighting system, and the glaziers are now at work affixing the numerous' window panes in their steel frames. When this job is completed the painters wiR follow and complete their work, after which the outside scaffolding will be removed. The joiners, are well under way with the work of building the large counter, cupboards, and public desks. The furnishings intcriorily are ot handsome appearance, the skirting, architraves, and picture rails being of stained heart rimu. The main entrance is now completed in a manganese black, which gives it a hard wearing surface as well its a handsome appearance. In the main entrance above the posting boxes a. large clock, which" will be visible from the street, is to be installed. On either side of the clock a series of . glass cases will be fitted, and in these mail notices, weather reports, etc., will be displayed? Messrs Robinson, and Beagley, the contractors, are hopeful, that the building will be completed and ready for occupation towards the middle of March.
