VALEDICTORY.
• MH. L. MAY. There was a good muster of the staff attached to the Paeroa office of the Public Works Department yesterday afternoon to bid farewell to Mr L. May, resident engineer, who has been promoted to take charge of .the Nel-. spn-Marlborough district of the department. Mr W. Barclay, in a happy vein, related several incidents of an amusing nature in connection with floods and other matters which had arisen during Mr May’s regime extending over .the past five years. Mr Barclay, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr May with a travelling rug for himself and one for Mrs May. Mr May, in respoiisfe, stated that he was sorry to be leaving the district, and in thanking the staff for their very welcome gifts commented on the unfailing loyalty which it had been his pleasure to experience while connected with this district.
Several toasts were then honoured, and occasion was ..taken to extend a welcome to klr O. G. Thornton, who succeeds Mr M,ay as resident engineer at Paeroa.
