A BIG LOSS.

RACE WINNINGS OF £216 STOLEN.

MISFORTUNE AFTER GOOD LUCK

"I attended the Feilding races on Saturday, and had the good fortune to increase a sum of £6O, which I took with me, by over £l5O, making the total amount in my wallet something like £216,” said Mr Jack Perrin, a young farmer from Rangitikei Line, to a representative of the “Dominion,” Wellington.

Naturally Mr Perrin was exceedingly pleased with his. good luck, but having a flock of sheep grazing in the borough reserve (Milverton s paddock) ,at the corner of Alexandra and Ferguson’s Streets, he made his customary visit to the field to fill the watering trough, and whilst stooping to work the hand pump it is thought that the bulky Wallet found its way to tlie top of his inside eoat pocket. Apparently, when he went back to ttie road and cranked his,, car, the valuable container dropped bn to the road.

About 10 p.m., some three and a half hours later, Mr Perrin received a telephone ring from Mr J. W. Teale, of Russell Street, stating that he had seen the wallet picked up in front of Mr M. Cohn’s residence in Grey Street, and that it then contained only a driver’s license and a number of private papers.

That evening during the interval at the picture theatre an advertisement wa,s flashed upon the screen stating ■that a valuable sum of money had been lost, for which a reward of £25 was offered. This, however, brought no response, and on Monday and Tuesday an advertisement appeared in the Press offering a reward of £5O for tlie return of the missing notes. Up till midday on Tuesday this also had not had the desired effect, and Mr Perrin has begun to think that the rc. if. fortune which followed his good luck cannot be retrieved.

In view of the fact that the loser of the money did not leave his car in Grey Street, it can only be assumed that the wallet was found outside the sheep paddock and deposited where it was picked up after the notes had been extracted.
