WHO INVENTED TANKS ?
JUDGE’S CORRESPONDENCE. CAPTAIN BENTLEY’S CHANCE. LONDON, Nov. 30. Widespread interest in Captain Bede Bentley’s claim for £300,000 .against the Government, alleging he is the inventor of war tanks, is revealed by -Mr Justice McCardie, .to the effect that he has received large numbers of letters, photographs, and bulky packages also specifications, for the invention of an armoured car dated 1883. Counsel declared that he had also received large numbers of letters, while inventors were communicating with him day and night. ' Lieut.-Gen. Sir Edw. Bethune gave evidence that Captain Bede Bentley called; at Office in 1914 J and spoke of an idea for an armoured traction car.
Witness was not interested because he had his own work to do.
The Solicitor-General tendered a statement it must not be inferred that E ? arl Kitchener, because he was sceptical over the tanks, was neglectful of the country’s interests; Earl Kitchener had many pressing duties, and the non-devel.opment of the tank was no reflection on his character or, ser-
vice. ' The Court reserved its decision on Captain Bentley’s claim.
