TRAGIC STORM IN ITALY.
A FATAL TIDAL WAVE. MANY VILLAGES DESTROYED. ROME, Nov. 30. A tremendous storm of w'ind and rain swept Southern Italy yesterday. Houses and ships in harbours were wrecked, and swollen rivers burst their banks and flooded .the countryside. \ The floods destroyed crops, drowned cat,tie, and demolished railways. A tidal, wave submerged the coast between Naples; and Sicily and destroyed shipping. The inhabitants of .the _ places affected were taken unawares by the furious storm, find many were killed or injured by flying debris. Cantanzaro reports the worst damage. There the crops were totally destroyed. Tile seawall was smashed at Naples, and ships broke from their moorings. As a result there were many collisions. The liner President Garfield was unable to enter the harbour. There were numerous fires, in the city of Naples. The whole district was plunged into darkness owing to the destruction of the electric power cables. The full, casualties and the extent of the damage are not yet known. According to- the latest reports the sea invaded the land for a great distance tilong the coast of Calabria for 100yds inshore, and destroyed many villages; and olive and orange planta-, tidns close to the coast. . The town of Bagnai’a was completely destroyed. Torrential rains flooded thousands, of acres, and several persons were drowned. STORM IN GREECE. ‘ SEVERAL VESSELS LOST. ATHENS, Nov. 30. A violent storm is raging on the Greek coast. Several steameps have been lost. Inland communications are interrupted. v *
