ORPHANS’ CLUB.
LOCAL TALENT SESSION. The fifth session of the Paeroa Orphans’ Club was held in the Soldiers,’ Club on Thursday evening, and was well attended by brethren from all parts of the district. The president (Bro. P. Williams) conducted the opening ceremony, and then vacated the chair and handed over control of the session to Bro. F. E. Flatt. After the formal greetings had been exchanged and the orchestra of eight members had contributed a couple of inspiring selections the members settled down to , enjoy .themselves. A feature of the evening’s entertainment, was that all the musical and vocal items were contributed by members of the Paeroa club, and a first-clas;s programme was submitted. In a surprising way modest members came forward with items o£ different characters, and probably one of the most appreciated of the many enjoyable ones submitted was the pianor forte selection by Bro. T. A. Moresby. Bi’O. Flatt made an ideal chairman, and kept’ the gathering in roars of laughter with a number bf interesting and highly amusing stories of life on the goldfields in the early days in this district. Just prior to the supper adjournment the president, on behalf of the committee, presented the secretary. Bro. R. S. Carden, with a handsome set of carvers, suitably inscribed, to. mark .the occasion of his approaching marriage, and as a slight token of the esteem in which he is held by his brother orphans,. In asking Bro. Carden to accept the gift the president paid tribute to his ability a;a a secretary, and stated that mainly through his energy and organisation the club in Paeroa had come into existence. He concluded by wishing Mr Carden and life future Wife good luck, good health, and happiness. The members were then upstanding and lustily sang “For he’s a jolly good fellow,” and concluded with the Orphan’s war-cry.
Bro. Carden, who was visibly taken by surprise, warmly thanked the members for their tangible expression of appreciation of his humble efforts. Among those contributing to the harmony of the evening, in addition to the club’s orchestra, were : Bros. W. Bottom ley, T. A. Moresby, R. Foster, Dixon, E. W. Porritt, Dunlop, and E. V. Slyfield.
