To-day is. Dominion Day, and a close holiday is being observed by the local banks and solicitors. Flags are being flown from the Government Offices and the Ohinemuri County Council Chambers.

Supporters of the Reform Party are invited to meet Mr A. M. Samuel, the Reform candidate for the Ohinemuri electorate, at the Centenary Hall, Paeroa, at 8 o’clock on Wednesday evening.

Saturday marked the 18th anniversary of the proclamation of N.Z. as a Dominion. The change of status from a colony to a dominion was announced at the opening of Parliament on June 27, 1907, and came into force on September 26, 1907.

Men of this district will no doubt be interested to learn that Mr A. E. For sixty years the Salvation Army has been carrying on the work of social uplifting, feeding the hungry, alleviating suffering, and seeking the lost. This work is still being carried on, and the need is greater than ever. The Self Denial appeal is the main source of income by which this everincreasing work is maintained. To this end collectore will be at the Hikutaia saleyards on Wednesday next, September 30.*

When the Waihou River stop-banks at Netherton were being made deep pits were dug to obtain spoil, and since then settlers, have Icyst many head of stock which got into the pits and could not get out without assistance. Unless this Was forthcoming before high tide the animal was drowned. The Ratepayers’ Association took up the matter and the president wrote to the Minister for Public Works suggesting that the dredges) be utilifsed to fill the pits with sand from the river-bed. A reply has been received stating that the Hon. J. G. Coates was having inquiries made with the object of complying with the suggestion.

Some time ago there was published in this paper a satirical obituary notice concerning the five Plains brother ratepayers’ associations. Almost immediately the Kerepeehi body asserted itself, angrily denying that, it was dead and claiming that it had only been in isolation on account of the infantile paralysis cvidenmic. Without any excuses whatever the Nebhertbn body some time later reappeared, and from the vigour dialplayed made it evident that it had only been renting awhile to recouperate after its; bridge fight to tackle the loading problem. The Turua brother was thought to be dead without a doubt, but now, at'the first suggestion of .the reappearance of that archenemy of the brothers, “More Rates,” it h,as shaken off the state of coma. A meeting will be held this evening to consider the Pipiroa bridge proposal and other matters.

Robert Louis Stevenson once declared, according to one of his biographers : “No woman should marry a man who doesn’t smoke,” and Stevenson, it must be admitted, knew human nature. Another famous man of letters, Bulwer-Lytton, Wrote (see hiis novel. “What will he do with it ?”) : “He who doth not smoke hath either known no greater grief, or refuseth himself the softest consolation next to that which comes from heaven.” As *o the harmfulness of the habit, much —very much—depends upon the tobacco. Brands heavily charged with nicotine are best avoided. In that respect and in other our own New Zealand grown tobaccos hold pride of place, because they contain comparatively little nicotine and may therefore be indulged in ad. lib. without affecting nerves or heart. Doubtless that is why they are finding favour with so many smokers. They are on sale everywhere, and are adapted to all tastes. Riverhead Gold is mild aroamtic; Toasted Navy Cut (Bulldog), a delightful medium; and Cut Plug No. 10' (Bull’s Head label), a fine full-flavoured tobacco.*
