PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.
MEETING GF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee was held on Saturday evening, the chairman (Mr C. H. Pascoe) presiding over the following : Messrs C. T. Mettam, W. T. Power, F. Eaddy, A. E. Say, R. J. Thorp, W. H. Blakeway, and W. L. Lawrence (secretary). TEACHING STAFF. The Auckland Education Board wrote confirming the appointment to the teaching staff of Mr C. W. Malcolm, assistant master, and Miss K. V. O’Grady, infant mistress. SUPPLY OF RECORDS. In acknowledging the receipt of voluntary contributions amounting to £5 from the parents and pupils and forwarded with an application for a subsidy for the purpose of purchasing . gramophone records for use in the school, the Education Board advised that it would be necessary to forward a list of records it was proposed to buy for the approval of the department. DANGER FROM FIRESA circular letter was received from tlie board pointing out that a school had recently hefen burned down through lack o fproper control on the part of those in charge. The board enjoined teachers and committeas to exercise the utmost care in extinguishing all fires before school build- , ings were vacated. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS. The headmaster reported that the wall-boarding had come to. hand and had been placed in position in the secondary class-room. The seats in the playground and basement of the infants’ department had also been painted. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Blakeway, the matter of securing 20 feet of 4'in tileg for the; drain in the girls’ playground was left in the hands of Mr Mettam and the secretary, with power to act. It was decided to procure four loads of spawls to complete a border round the flower-beds near the science room. EXTRA PLAYING AREA. The headmaster drew attention to a statement made recently by the Minister for Education when speaking at a Teachers’ Institute meeting at . Wellington, that where practicable all schools should have at leaist four acres as a playing area. Continuing, Mr Taylor said that the Paeroa school, with a roll '(attendance of 438 pupils, had an area of only 1 acre 3 roods. Granted the Borough Council had given permission to use a portion of the domain and Lewis Street; and the Defence Department had also loaned a small area at the rear of the Defence Office, but the use of these areas could not be expected indefinitely. In any case, with the total area the playground was not large enough. After jsome discussion it was resplv T ed that the Borough Council be asked to put a price on the municipal reserve in Nahum Street, facing Wood Street, and' that representations be made to the Education Board asking it to consider acquiring that area. SERVICES TO BE RECOGNISED. It was resolved that a testimonial be prepared and forwarded to Miss M. Shaw, who lias retired from the teaching profession after 32 years’’ service at the Paerba school. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Thorp’ and Blakeway were, appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £l4 18s lid were passed for payment.
