DEPUTY-MAYOR
POSITION IN SOME CENTRES. KOT KNOWN IN WELLINGTON. The fact that botli in the Christchurch and Auckland City' Council considerable feeling was aroused over the appointment of deputy-Mayors attention is drawn to the absence ot anv such pos'tion in Wellington (saj» thro Dominion). There has. never been such sn office here. Mayors have been absent, from meetings, have attended late, or left early (owing chiefly to their having been members of Pailianient), but on such occasions the invariable rule nas been for the Mayor to call upon the senior councillor to occupy the chair <n his absence. a procedure fhat has worked very well. Apparently the council has never felt, the necessity for an official deputy-Mayor.
