FIRE AT KAIHERE.

FEW PARTICULARS

Few particulars concerning the destruction of the Kaihere Post Office by fire on Tuesdaymight can be ascertained. The building was an isolated one. situated, on the top of a hill, where it could be seen if burning from a great distance. A party returning from a dance iff Ngatea. about 2 a;m. did not see the fire, and as far as can be ascertained it was. not until morning that it was noticed that the fire had .occurred.

The destruction was complete, but the condition of the papers in the safe is not yet known, ais .the door cannot yet be opened owing to the lock being damaged. The building, which belonged to Mr T. Cassin, had been in use as a post office for about 12 years, and until recently was insured. Mr Cassin contemplated effecting repairs and enlarging the building, and had let the policy expire, intending .to take out another when the work was. completed.

A temporary office was opened oh Wednesday afternoon in a- small hut across the road. It is possible that the building at present in use at Ngatea will be taken to Kaihere when the new Ngatea office is occupied.
