OHINEMURI JOCKEY CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. FIRST DAY’S RESULTS. TRESILLIAN WINS THE CUP. Ail roads led to the Racecourse, Paeroa, on Saturday last, the occasion being the first day of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s popular annual two days’ fixture. The morning dawned grey, and with a heavy sky, but as the day wore on the clouds dispersed and before mid-day the sun was shining and ideal weather prevailed. Long before noon a large concourse .of people began to assemble, and with the arrival of the special trains the crowd that occupied the various stands and lawns was very largely increased, and *o this number must be added the hundreds of patrons who journeyed in motor-cars from all parts of the Auckland province. It is estimated that the attendance on Saturday constituted a record for any first day of previous meetings. That the Paeroa meeting is one of the most popular outside of Auckland is evidenced by the steadily increasing attendances each year, and with the many improvements and extra facilities provided since ,the last fixture a still brighter future for the club appears to be assured. General satisfaction was expressed by turf patrons on Saturday, and not a few were generous in their praise of the improvements made. The main entrance, lawns, and gay flower-beds were much admired. Grctat credit ijs due to the president, Mr A. D. McGuire, and the secretary, Mr , 14. Poland, and the stewards for the completeness of the arrangements and the smooth running of matters generally in connection with the meeting The result of the enterprise of the cllih in endeavouring to provide facilities second to none outside of Auckland was reflected in the commendatory remarks that were freely passed. Those who attended were treated to an interesting racing programme. All tne events, both on the flat and over the sticks, were keenly contested, and some exciting finishes resulted. The handicapper, Mr R. Wynyard, had the winners well concealed, and a few surprises resulted. Mr A. W. Gordon was present in his official capacity as. stipendiary steward and was called on to deal with two eases. In the Karangahake Handicap Rosen,_ rider of' Merry Damon, questioned the decision of the judge (Mr E. V. Sutherland), and was summoned before the judicial committee. An apology was demanded, and Rosenwas severely cautioned. The second incident occurred during the running of the Ilauraki Plains Steeplechase, when Miss Melya and King Abbey ran outside, a flag in the concluding round. -An inquiry was held, and as a result the stake; was impounded pending further action. The dividend, however, was order- to be paid. The sum of £36,018 was put through the total isator, as against £30,712 Ils for tire first day last year, an increase of £5305 10s. ,

Following are the details of the racing
