LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A start was made this morning oy the contractor with the work of ploughing and levelling the number one playing field in the Paeroa Domain.
A much-needed coat of paint is a* present being applied to the Courthouse buildings in Willoughby Street, Paeroa.
No mention was made at the County Council meeting at Ngatea on Tuesday of any matter in cc.nnection with the proposed Pipiroa water supply or the proposed Pipiroa. ferry. In connection with the latter, it is understood that a meeting of the committee will be held when the managing director of Messrs R. P. Gibbons, Ltd. returns to the district.
Great credit is due to Police- Sergeant Maclean and his staff for the way they handled the traffic to and from the racecourse on Saturday. The number of motor vehicles greatly exceeded that of previous years, and it is pleasing to record that there were no accidents.
The main roll for the borough of Paeroa has now been completed, and there are 865 names on it, which is a slight increase on last year. Burgesses who have any doubt about their names being on the roll should call at the Borough Council chambers immediately and make an inspection. There is yet time to have their names placed on the supplementary roll.
The change of the weekly halfholiday from Saturday to Thursday at Thames, which was decided on by the Borough Council and gazetted last month, is so far inoperative, as quite a number of the larger business people have decided to continue the. Saturday half-holiday, and have applied for permits to do so. The, position is somewhat mixed, some keeping Thursday, and others Saturday;
lu spite of the many improvements effected by the Ohinemuri Jockey Club at its course since the last meeting the provision of additional turnstiles is necessary. During the height of the arrival of the public on Saturday the/existing number of entrances was totally inadequate to admit the crowd expeditiously. Considerable confusion could be avoided if more use were made of the big gates until such time as additional turnstiles are erected.
An Oamaru resident who. recently visited the North Island was interested (says the North Otago Times) that a special train was run on a recent Sunday from Wellington to Kaitoke, a distance of about 30 miles, to enable residents of .the city to gather blackberries. Hundreds of children took part in the excursion, and no cases of infantile; paralysis have been reported as a result.
Acceptances for the concluding day’?, lacing of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s annual meeting, to be held at Paeroa to-morrow, can be regarded as satisfactory. Ninety-two horses in the eight' events have been paid up for. The leading event on the programme, the Paeroa Handicap, has attracted a field of eleven, which is two in excess of the entries received for the same event last year. Eighteen horses have accepted for the Miners’ Hack Handicap, which number exceeds last year’s entries by four. The rain on Satin day night was just what was required to take a little of the sting out of the track, and with every prospect of a line day to-morrow a record attendance of turf patrons is antipicated, and an enjoyable day’s pleasure should result.
In order to ascertain the amount, of w.atdr in the Waitakaruru stream, which information is required by the Government in connection with tlie subsidising of the proposed water supply scheme for Pipiroa and district, a , gauge is being put in the strejam. Mr F<. F. Adams, the engineer, visited the site on Saturday,
Why should a man who is careful to wear and use only Empire products continually cram his pipe full of American tobacco ? Keep the money in the country by Smoking our very own tobacco, grown in New Zealand. Try it, and you will be delighted witn its unequalled mildness and smooth and mellow •smoking properties, due to the small percentage of nicotine and to .the toasting process to which the tobacco has been subjected. Tills makes for health, since excess in nicotine has a very bad influence on the heart and nerves. Once the smoker gets accustomed to the pure tobacco flavour of the local product he' will reject all foreign brands with their adulterations and he will awaken to the fact that he can get a better article grown and manufactured in his own country, for less money. Those who like a full body ■should try Cut. Plug No, 10 the, Bullhead label, or the somewhat milder Toasted Navy Cut (Bulldog) vastly different from the non-toasted imported brands, while Riverhead Gold excels all others in mildness iind aroma.*
“Some of these country pubs in North Canterbury arc rough and ready,” commented a tennis playey to a Christchurch Sun writer. He had spent his holidays wandering round the northern end of the South Island. “ I '.vent into one for dinner the other day, and the waitress said, “Wot’H yer have —beef or mutton ? Mlitlon’'S orf.’ ”
