Tile ehairman, who is the council’s representative, disagreed, contending that all along the council had agreed that it would accept the £1 for £1 subsidy. ’ He did not think it fair to ask for more at the present stage. Cr. Nicholson explained why the isettlers of the Pekapeka Road could not raise <a loan. Or. Madgwick said that the. Turua riding roads were being used by the through traffic, yet no subsidy could be collected. The board should declare.the Turua-Netherton Road the highway if the Pekapeka Road settlers did not make an effort to get the road metalled. Cr. Miller said that the board would not consider giving a greater subsidy for the Pekapeka Road considering the class of the country traversed in comparison to that through which other unmetallcd highways pass. . SLAUGHTERHOUSE LICENSE. Mr J. Lyon, Kerepeehi, was granted a slaughterhouse license. TENDERS. The engineer reported having received tenders for Pekapeka Road, but in view of the fact that the Highways Board had not. yet sanctioned the work he did not know whether to accept any of them. The proposal, had been forwarded on December 11 to the board. The chairman and engineer were empowered to deal with the matter. PATETONGA METALLING. On Cr. Mayn’s motion the engineer was instructed to look into the question of metalling the road near the Patetonga pound, and was given power to act. WILSON’S ROAD. Cr. Hare said that at one time the Public Works Department had made a grant of £15,0'00 for Wilson’s. Road, as it was an outlet for the Awaiti block. This grant had since been transferred to the Main Highways Board, and he was of opinion that the Public Works Department should be asked for a further grant, so that the council could lift it on the work already done.
