BICYCLE ACCIDENT.
' qr-* YOUNG MAN’S MISFORTUNE. COLLARBONE BROKEN. A painful accident resulting in a broken collarbone and skin abrasions befell Mr Reg. Smith, of Willoughby Street, Paeroa, shortly after mid-day on Saturday. It appears that Mr Smith, who had been working at Waitakaruru, had set out on a pusn bicycle for his home. When some three miles on his way he rode on to the side of the road to allow a motor-car to pass, and in doing so a stone flew up and became lodged in the spokes of the front wheel of the bicycle, causing Mr Smith to fall heavily and sustain the injuria? mentioned. The bicycle was also considerably damaged.
Ry a strange coincidence the injured man’s father, Mr Walter Smith, came along the road on a motor-cycle shortly after the accident happened, and by .means of a sugar bag and a strap was able to render first-aid to his son who was in considerable pain and very much shaken. After making the sufferer as comfortable as possible Mr Smith went on to Ngatea in an endeavour to obtain a car to convey his son to Paeroa. The services of a taxi could not be obtained so Mr J. N. Anderson, of the Hauraki Plains County staff, borrowed a car and went back for the injured man, whom he drove into Paeroa, The journey necessarily occupied a considerable time owing to the rough condition of the road in places causing Mr Smith a good deal of extra suffering. Dr. Little, who had been advised previously of the accident, attended to the injured man on arrival at Paeroa shortly after 4 o’clock. The doctor commented favourably on the first-aid treatment rendered by Messrs W. Smith and Anderson.
